 renaissance gown

Erin's Renaissance Gown
I made this custom gown for my neighbor's daughter. I had always wanted to make one of these gowns but never had a reason until I met Erin. She needed one to go to the Texas Renaissance Festival.
There was no pattern for this dress. It started as a pencil sketch that I drew based on various paintings I saw while in London, England.

To make my own template, I started by pinning a piece of muslin around her bust line. I used pins to pull and tuck how I wanted the bodice to fit. I used a marker to define the dart lines and cut marks.
From that rough template, I made the bodice of the dress. I attached the outer skirt to the bodice. The sleeves are detachable. The inner skirt is a complete and separate skirt.
All over the gown and hat, there are approximately 600 hand sewn fresh water pearls, 4 yards of gold Venice lace, 4 yards of jacquard ribbon, and about 1 1/2 yards of vintage ruby acrylic gems.
This is definitely a one of a kind dress. Mostly because it was before I learned anything about making period style clothes. I was just guessing on how to make this dress. I am learning the techniques to make these kinds of dresses correctly. More to come soon.

The rough template that became my pattern.

Work in progress....deciding the layout of trims.

Silk crepe chemise with crocheted lace trim.

Back in February when I suggested a contest for Self Drafted patterns, I had no idea how great it was going to turn out! Based your suggestions and under the expert moderation of the contest manager Debbie Cook we ran the contest in June - July.

And talk about inspiration! Each one of these projects is a learning in itself. It makes me so proud to be able to understand and appreciate the art of sewing which is so clearly demonstrated in each project.

Let us meet the winners, shall we?

First Prize: Choice of any one of the 5 Pattern Master software programs. Value of prize up to $200.

Patricia made this lovely green linen dress for a friend who needed a "Mother of the groom dress". After several design sketches and muslins later, she was came up with the final version. Inspired by the delicate sweet pea tendrils, she added the embellishments after the dress was complete.

Read her review to learn more about the design and construction process.

Second Prize: WildThings! Vintage software, WildThings! Pets software and Click&Sew Software of their choice (Total value of $105).

Pamela's love for the Renaissance period is clearly demonstrated in this carefully designed and created Medieval Renaissance Gown for Court. Pamela estimates she spent 80+ hours on this including the time she spent reading and researching the garments of that period. For her, it's still a work in progress. For us it's jaw dropping gorgeous!!!!

She used 2.5 yds Heavy silk organza for the chemise. 5.5 yards Silk brocade for the outer gown/bodice, sleeves, and hat. 2.25 yards Silk Dupioni for the inner shirt. That's a lot of fabric!

Read her review for more pictures, and to learn more about the evolution of this gown.

Congratulations to both winners, and to all those who participated in this contest.

We thank the contest sponsor, Wild Ginger for generous prizes! I am sure the winners are looking forward to their prizes.
