Domino Dalmatian Pillow

| A mother's love for her son is beautiful. My son's teacher loves her son too. She came to me to ask me to save her son's baby pillow. This poor pillow had been very well loved for about a decade and showed it. |
Some minor attempts at repairs had been made, but it needed an overhaul. I deconstructed it. I carefully picked and cut out the hand stitched repairs. I hand washed the front and back panels. I wet blocked the front panel, and carefully straightened out the torn pieces. I carefully pressed the panel to about 3/4 % dry. I then finished pressing the panel with a light weight fusible stabilizer behind it. This will strengthen the old panel. Several areas were showings signs that it would tear more and soon. I then scanned the stabilized panel into my computer. I cleaned up the graphics to have only the dog in true colors.

This was machine appliquéd over top of the original panel. I added a layer of cotton batting with a muslin backing. I quilted the panel by stitching around the dog and the square border. Then I stitched over the child's name on the back of the pillow as the hand stitching was coming undone. I stitched around both panels to create the pillow pocket and stuffed it with a polyester stuffing that is made for pillows. It won't lump up in wads later. The final touch was hand stitching to close the pillow. Voila! A restored pillow is ready for a cute little boy. |
